Lyon to Albi

After an extra day spent admiring the sights of Lyon and enjoying the good company of my origami making host, I jumped on a train to Albi, a pictoresque town situated on the River Tam which flows rich and brown through a valley that cuts like scar across the city. A huge Gothic Cathedral dominates the skyline, its high, blank walls force your eyes higher and higher as you attempt to take in this gigantic structure.

I played in the garden with a beautiful bamboo backdrop. The evening was warm and sultry, but not uncomfortable. Various wonderful food items were brought by the audience to create a spread which, combined with the warmth of the evening, created a party-like atmosphere that it was a joy to play in.

We wound our way down from the mountains and towards Lyon, a long drive on motorways via service station coffee, FM radio and old tour stories. It rained and the passing countryside turned into a grey and green blur.

Lyon's environs are heavily industrialised; large pipes run alongside the motorway supported by rusting metal stanchions, behind lie buildings wrapped in metal frames with large concrete wastelands nearby, barrels stand collecting rain water next to cracks that sprout withered grasses.

The city itself sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers. Bright, crisp water flowed alongside the road as we journeyed into the urban heart which runs upwards onto the encapsulating hills. High to our left the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon was silhouetted against the white clouds, our perspective of it shifting as our path meandered parallel to the Rhône.

The venue for the evening's show was in Kraspek Myzik, a small but evidently well run venue who had hosted artists like Mirah and Lydia Lunch in the past.

The show was with American harpist Blewharp.

I had another day to spend in Lyon before heading to Albi, so I spent my time exploring the Roman amphitheatre, the cathedral and wandering along the river in warm early summer sunshine. Photos of this to follow.
